BACKGOUND

Our group formed when some like minded locals came together in 2018. After a few hui, we came up with a vision. We want to work with the local community to improve biodiversity and water quality in our backyard - the Te Huka Waiohinganga (Esk) river catchment. The river catchment contains some pockets of native bush, but overall there is little biodiversity and during big rains, lots of sediment washes off the land and enters the streams and the river. We want to improve this situation so have begun to plant along the river in an area next to Eskdale Park. We’ve partnered with Petane Marae and local forestry company Pan Pac Forest Products Ltd.

Our objectives

Objective 1

Improve water quality through a reduction in sediment entering the river

Objective 2

Improve biodiversity

Objective 3

Improve habitats for native fish

Objective 4

Create opportunities for education and recreation

objective 5

Ensure we work within the constraints of the existing flood hazards
